To help draft a safety standard for large-capacity lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), JARI collects safety assessment data by implementing electrical, mechanical, environmental and other diverse tests on those batteries.

2) Development of an onboard battery performance assessment technique
JARI strives to develop a performance assessment technique for onboard batteries through EV/PHEV usage analysis, battery performance quantitative assessment, and the correlation analysis of battery operation conditions and deterioration factors. Data are collected from over 1,200 vehicles in actual use and from road running and chassis dynamometer tests. Applying deterioration factors as parameters, battery life is tested and the electrodes and electrolytic solutions are analyzed in order to improve the accuracy of battery performance assessment technique and the selection of optimal materials for batteries.
